The VA has various compensation programs for veterans that recognize the effects of their physical and mental conditions sustained during their military service. VA compensation programs also benefit surviving family members of the veterans, including dependent kids, spouses, and dependent parents, for their economic loss due to the death of a veteran during their service, as a result of a service-related health condition, or after discharge from the service. The following are VA compensation benefits for veterans.

    Disability Compensation

This tax-free financial benefit is compensated to veterans with disabilities caused by injuries or conditions sustained during their military service. Disability compensation is paid according to a veteran’s condition. According to Berry Law Veterans Law Attorneys, individuals should have the right documents and prepare adequately before filing their application since the disability must be proved. Failure to follow VA guidelines can also force the body to deny your claim.

VA usually rates a veteran’s disability in terms of percentage, scaling from 10% to 100% in increments of 10%. Veterans with disabilities related to their service are also eligible for compensation, even if their disability occurred after their service. Disability benefits also aim at compensating veterans for their working time lost as a result of their conditions.

    Dependency and Indemnity Compensation

This is a tax-free financial payment eligible for surviving kids, spouses, or parents after the death of a military member. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation is awarded to beneficiaries after a veteran dies while on active training duty or service duty. The benefit can also be paid to survivors of those veterans who succumbed to a disability linked to their military service.

    Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA)

According to VA Chapter 35 benefits program, survivors and dependents of certain military members and veterans are eligible for restorative training or education benefits. This program is also known as Dependent Education Assistance. Eligible beneficiaries can get 36 to 45 months of full-time benefits or its equivalent. These educational benefits are usually in terms of the following:

    • Online courses
    • Degree programs for colleges or technical and vocational institutions
    • GED programs for high school diplomas
    • Educational and career counseling programs
    • On-the-job training

Typically, a veteran must have a disability rating of 100% which is connected to their time in the service to qualify for this program.

    Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)

This tax-free program is payable to veterans, their spouses, surviving parents, and surviving spouses. Veterans receive this payment as compensation for their special situation that requires assistance from another person. Such situations include loss of legs or hands. For surviving spouses and spouses, this benefit is usually an attendance or aid payment based on the need for care that is to be provided by another person.

    VA Dental Care Services

This program is based on several factors, including VA disability rating, current living conditions, and dental disabilities linked to your service. After considering these factors, the VA classifies someone into a “Benefit Class,” and the veteran gets specific dental benefits according to that specific classification. Typically, a disability rating for a veteran must be 100% to be eligible for full VA dental care.

    Emergency Financial Assistance Grants

Many state, federal, and nonprofit programs offer emergency financial help grants to disabled veterans. These grants are usually used for medical costs and other living expenses.

    Claims Based on Special Circumstances

Veterans may qualify for other forms of disability benefits if their disability is proven to be connected to their service. Special benefits under this compensation program include automobile allowance, individual unemployability, clothing allowance, and hospitalization.

There are various guidelines that veterans must follow when applying for VA benefits. Since this process can be challenging and lengthy, you should seek help from qualified individuals, including lawyers.
