India is one of the world’s largest producers of food grains, with an estimated production of 252 million tonnes (MT) in 2019-20. India is the second largest producer of rice, wheat, pulses, and other food grains. India is also the largest producer of fruits and vegetables. The country has witnessed a remarkable growth in crop production and productivity over the last few decades. This article looks at the state-wise crop production and productivity in India in 2019-20.
India’s Crop Production in 2019-20
In 2019-20, India produced 252.02 million tonnes of food grains, of which rice production was 112.91 million tonnes, wheat production was 99.70 million tonnes, pulses production was 23.16 million tonnes and other food grains production was 16.25 million tonnes. India also produced 295.95 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables in 2019-20.
State-wise Crop Productivity in India
India’s top five states in terms of total food grain production in 2019-20 were Uttar Pradesh (61.94 million tonnes), Punjab (23.26 million tonnes), Madhya Pradesh (21.97 million tonnes), Bihar (20.55 million tonnes) and Maharashtra (18.77 million tonnes).
In terms of rice production, the top five states were West Bengal (18.45 million tonnes), Uttar Pradesh (17.45 million tonnes), Andhra Pradesh (15.31 million tonnes), Punjab (13.68 million tonnes) and Chhattisgarh (10.51 million tonnes).
In terms of wheat production, the top five states were Uttar Pradesh (33.02 million tonnes), Punjab (21.14 million tonnes), Madhya Pradesh (12.14 million tonnes), Haryana (11.12 million tonnes) and Rajasthan (10.90 million tonnes).
In terms of pulses production, the top five states were Madhya Pradesh (6.42 million tonnes), Uttar Pradesh (4.14 million tonnes), Maharashtra (3.78 million tonnes), Rajasthan (3.47 million tonnes) and Karnataka (2.47 million tonnes).
In terms of other food grains production, the top five states were Uttar Pradesh (6.90 million tonnes), Madhya Pradesh (4.11 million tonnes), Maharashtra (3.01 million tonnes), Bihar (2.58 million tonnes) and Gujarat (2.13 million tonnes).
