Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a widespread oral health issue that affects millions of people in the U.S. alone. While this condition is highly preventable, the fact is that many people still neglect their oral health to the point that a large number of them have varying degrees of gum disease.

Those in the local area searching online for terms such as “Gum Disease – Garland, Tx” are usually either trying to find the symptoms and causes of it, or they are looking for a nearby dental specialist that can offer treatment for it. The purpose of today’s article is to help you with both:

    The Two Main Stages

    Gingivitis

The beginning stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. Indicators of developing this issue include red, swollen, and/or bleeding gums. At this stage, with no foundational/structural damage to the teeth, the condition is reversible.

    Periodontitis

Untreated, gingivitis will develop into periodontitis, which is much more serious. As the gums and teeth begin to separate, pockets are created, which then fill with tartar and plaque. As the condition continues to progress, the depth of the pockets increases, ultimately leading to tissue and bone loss. In the advanced stages, it will result in severe tooth decay loss.

Factors that Can Cause or Contribute to It

Several factors play into the development of gum disease. A few examples include:

    • Neglecting oral care
    • Hereditary factors
    • Certain medications
    • Smoking
    • Diabetes
    • Stress

Additionally, hormonal changes in women, such as menopause or pregnancy, can make gums more vulnerable to infection.

    Some of the Symptoms

As mentioned in the opening of the article, people often go online to find out what some of the common symptoms are. They include swollen, red, and/or tender gums, bleeding while brushing, continuous bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, and/or changes in how your teeth and bite fit together.

    Diagnosing and Managing It

Finding out if you have gum disease is as simple as visiting a local Gum Disease – Garland, Tx dentist to undergo an exam. This is an evaluation that includes inspecting the gums for inflammation, measuring pocket depths, using X-rays to determine bone loss, as well as a look into any medical or dental history which could be a contributing factor.

The first step to treating it is usually cleaning and scaling (deep cleaning). However, it’s important to also practice preventative care that starts with regular trips to the dentist for scheduled cleanings, proper oral care at home (brushing, flossing, rinsing), a healthy diet, avoiding tobacco, and many others.

Finding the Right Gum Disease – Garland, Tx Specialist

Ultimately, gum disease is a common but easily avoidable dental issue that could have potentially-serious long term impacts. By being more aware and on top of preventative care, you can greatly reduce the chance of you or your family struggling with this disease. And by finding an experienced and skilled local dental care provider, you can be more proactive when it comes to your oral health.
