Mirabai Chanu Family And Early Life
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is the shortest form of her name and her full name is Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. She was born and brought up in Nongpok kakching, Imphal East, Manipur, India. Her date of birth is 8th August 1994 and she is 27 years old now. Mirabai Chanu’s father’s name is Saikhom Kriti Meitiwho is working in the Public work department under the state government. Her mother’s name is Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima who is having a shop and maintaining it. She is having five siblings and her elder brother’s name is Saikhom Sanatomba Meitiei and her elder sister’s name is Saikhom Rangita and Saikhom Shaya. Mirabai is the sixth child of her parents.
She and her family belong to the Hindu religion and she is currently unmarried and single. At the age of 12, she used to pick up firewood in the forest for home-usage. At that time She could easily carry a huge bundle of firewood to her home which her elder brother found it hard to even pick up.
Early Life Struggles Of Mirabai Chanu
While she decided to make sports as her career their village Nongpok Kakching doesn’t have that much facility to train up. She also doesn’t have any proper coach or mentor to guide her to reach his goals. So she decided to meet the Sports Authority of India (SAI Centre in the year 2008, at Khuman Lampak in Imphal. But she doesn’t find any hope in that place but by God’s grace, she luckily met the legendary Manipuri weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, who inspired her to the core. So she got a guide and after few days she went to the weightlifting training center and she met an international weightlifter and coach Anita Chanu and she mentored Mirabai to the sport. Then later at some time she got mentored and coach by Vijay Sharma. Her career starts here.

In the initial stage, while she was studying school, there was a compulsion that she has to manage both sports as well as her studies. So, Mirabai Chanu struggled hard to maintain her time schedule to her school and to the sports training center for that she has to wake up at 5 am in the morning and reach the center at 6 am then again she has to change the bus twice to reach the school.

After winning many local sports meet she got a government job in the sports quota as a chief ticket inspector at Indian railways. Her career also grown simultaneously and she became a world-class weightlifter by lifting 170 kgs of weight and won the silver medal in the Commonwealth games of 2014 under the category of 48 kgs.
Sports Life of Mirabai Chanu
Then she got qualified for the Rio Olympics under the category of 48 kgs. She got failed to succeed in the Rio Olympics but she has got a huge experience in competition with other fellow participants. In the year 2017, she has participated in World Weightlifting Championships held at Anaheim and she also won the Gold medal in the women’s 48kg category by lifting 194 kgs of weight in total.
Gold Medal By Mirabai Chanu
Then in the year 2018, she won the first Gold medal for India in the commonwealth games by lifting 196 kgs of weight, 86 kgs in the snatch, and 110 kgs in clean and jerk. Then in 2019, she won the Bronze medal in the 49kg category at the Asian Weightlifting championships. 199 kg was her best every total weight but she missed out on bronze as her snatch weight was lower than the third-place athlete.
In the world Weightlifting Championship, Mirabai lifted 201 kgs of weight which was her career-best ever but she won only 4th place in that competition. After that, she worked hard and practice more to beat her own record in the 49 categories. The time came after four months of hard work she beat her own record by lifting 203 kgs in the 49 kg category and won the gold medal at the 2020 Senior National Weightlifting championship. She also won Gold at Qatar International Cup after lifting 194 kgs.
Mirabai Chanu in Tokyo Olympic
Mirabai Chanu was the second person to a won the silver medal in Summer Olympics 2020 took place in Tokyo after Kernam Malleswari. She managed to lift 202 kgs of weight under the 49kgs category. A new Olympic record was registered by Mirabai Chanu with a successful lift of 115 kg in clean and jerk. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on bringing home the silver medal from the event and making India proud.
2020 Tokyo Olympics
Recently Mirabai won a Silver medal in Tokyo Olympics. Finally, India’s 21 years dream for weightlifting medal at Olympics came true with a silver medal in the 49 kg category on 18/07/21. 27 years old Mirabai Chanu lifted a total weight of 202 kgs (snatch in 87 kg and Clear & Jerk in 115 kgs). Karnam Malleswari won bronze in the 2000 Olympics and after that now Silver medal came for India. The account of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics was started with Mirabai’s achievement.
Many celebrities and Government people were appreciated Mirabai Chanu for his achievement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweets about her achievement.

Awards By Indian Governments
Mirabai Chanu received the most prestigious sports award of India Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in the year 2018. She was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian Government. Manipur State chief minister also felicitated Mirabai with a 20 lakhs cash price.
